The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), and HPC Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC) have partnered to boost innovation in port operations, infrastructure development, and workforce skills.

The parties signed the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the IAPH World Ports Conference, held in Hamburg from 8-10 October.

By focusing on digitalisation, improving waterborne transport infrastructure, and increasing overall efficiency, the partners aim to deliver more effective port operations.

The MoU outlines plans for the three organisations to regularly share knowledge and expertise, with the aim of developing new approaches to port management, building capacity, and advancing technology within the maritime industry.

Lennart Kinau, HPA Board Member, said: “As global trade evolves, ports must adapt with intelligent, data-driven systems.

“This partnership strengthens our position at the forefront of digital transformation, allowing us both to enhance efficiency and governance in port management as well as to achieve new levels of sustainability along critical trade routes like the East-West corridor.”

Mawani views this collaboration as essential for enhancing Saudi Arabia’s connectivity and sustainability in global logistics. The MoU aims to implement new technologies to improve efficiency and strengthen key trade routes.

HPC CEO, Nils Kemme, further explained: “HPC has successfully delivered transformative port projects in over 130 countries for nearly half a century.

“This MoU builds on that legacy by focusing on the next generation of port solutions—automated systems and smart digital platforms that redefine how ports operate and minimise environmental impact.”

The next phase of the partnership will reportedly focus on creating a tech-driven port network that can adapt to new advancements in areas like AI, automation, and data-driven logistics.

Mawani recently recorded a 7.82 per cent increase in cargo throughput tonnage during September, reaching 28.1 million tonnes compared to 26.1 million tonnes in the same month of 2023.
