Wärtsilä has secured a five-year Maintenance Agreement for two Moroccan power plants totalling 169.5 megawatts (MW).

The plants are owned and operated by Morocco’s state utility, the Office State de l’Electricité et de l’Eau Potable (ONEE), which is responsible for electricity generation, transportation, and distribution.

The agreement, which comes into effect in Q1 2024, renews a previous five-year contract for power plants in Tan Tan and Dakhla, southern Morocco – both of which feature Wärtsilä 46 engines.

The Tan Tan and Dakhla plants are anticipated to help balance renewable energy generation with sustainable fuels.

Morocco is reportedly using a growing amount of renewable energy, and Wärtsilä engine technology can reportedly achieve maximum production in minutes to balance the inconsistent supply of renewables.

Wärtsilä said it has a long history of working with ONEE, which operates two power plants in Tan Tan and Dakhla that use Wärtsilä engines.

Patrick Borstner, Director, Operations Africa at Wärtsilä Energy, said: “Our customers value maintenance agreements as they ensure the efficiency, reliability and availability of the power plants. We are proud to have been awarded a renewal of this agreement and continue our long-term relationship with ONEE.”

In May, Tristar Eships, the marine logistics branch of the Dubai-based Tristar Group, chose Wärtsilä`s Decarbonisation Services to help reduce its carbon footprint.
